Principal

John C. Boden is currently Principal horn of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and a member of the New Hampshire Symphony. John is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Southern Maine, a member of the Portland Brass, Prometheus Chamber Winds, and is an active freelance musician throughout New England. John has performed with the Omaha Symphony and the Midlands Woodwind Quintet, the Block Ensemble.

John holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory. His studies on horn have been with James Funkhouser of the Kansas City Philharmonic, Frank Brouk and Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony, and with Philip Farkas. He has performed as a soloist and clinician throughout the Midwest, New England, in Austria and in the Republic of Panama. In the fall of 1991, John completed a sabbatical leave from his university position to spend time studying the history and performance practices of the natural horn with Richard Seraphinoff at the Indiana University and with Douglas Hill at the University of Wisconsin. John currently performs on the natural horn as a member of the Handel-Haydn Society of Boston, under the musical direction of Christopher Hogwood. He has also performed with the Boston Baroque ensemble, the Helicon Society in New York and with the Classical Orchestra of Philadelphia.

During the 1995-96 season, John took a year leave of absence and served as principal horn of the Utah Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Joseph Silverstein. While in Utah, John taught horn at Weber State University in Ogden, UT and performed in the L. A. East Recording Studios.
